Why this event?

Tired of the same lap?
Change the challenge.

You may know every corner of the Lakes—and be training for the same familiar Copenhagen races. This proposal turns a route you know into a completely different kind of event.

It is not about one fast lap or chasing a personal best. It is about returning to the start, hour after hour, managing your effort, your recovery and the growing temptation to stop. The familiar becomes physically demanding—and mentally harder with every yard.

Behind the idea

The idea comes from Max, who has grown tired of running just one lap around the Lakes. So the thought occurred: why not keep going until you are completely broken—and then do one more lap? The aim is to bring trail running’s blend of mental and physical endurance to those of us who live and run in the middle of the city.

Why the city?

Backyard ultras usually take place in forests or out in nature. This one happens in the middle of Copenhagen, among pedestrians and on a route many runners already know inside out.

First edition

The first trial will likely be limited to approximately 30–40 runners, keeping it small, local and manageable.

Target window

The aim is summer or autumn 2027, subject to sufficient interest, municipal permission, volunteers and a workable budget.

What is a backyard ultra?

Simple rules.
A difficult ending.

Complete one yard, recover with whatever time remains, then line up and do it again. It is less about speed than patience, organisation and stubbornness.

Start together

Every hour begins a new 6.7056 km yard. Everyone still in the event starts together on the hour.

Finish inside the hour

Run fast or slow, but return before 59:59. Whatever time remains is yours to eat, change and recover.

Be ready again

Miss the next hourly start or fail to finish the yard in time and your race is over.

Keep support simple

Bring your own food, drink, spare clothing and ideally a chair. Crew is helpful, but not required. Keep your setup compact—the rest area will be limited.

The city keeps moving

The paths stay public. Pedestrians, cyclists and red lights are part of the challenge. Cross on red and you are out.

Last runner standing

The event continues until only one runner completes a final yard alone. Everyone else records their completed yards.

The urban rule

Red means stop.

Waiting at red lights is not lost time—it is part of your yard. Runners have no priority over the city. Deliberately crossing against a red signal means disqualification.

The proposed course

Around all three lakes.

A proposed 6.7056 km route on public paths around Sortedams Sø, Peblinge Sø and Sankt Jørgens Sø, with a compact start and support area.
